Apply For a Boat Loan

By Kondwani Nyangulu

Acquiring boat loans is a great way to finance the purchase of a new or used boat. From small powerboats to larger sailboats, boat loans offer boaters a wonderful way to purchase their boat and be well on their way to enjoying this favorite pastime. There are a few different finance options which prospective borrowers can consider with regard to boat loans. Each has pros and cons associated with it and it is up to the borrower to choose the loan which is right for their specific financial situation.

Secured Loan Offered by a Lender Dealing Specifically with Boat Loans

One loan option for borrowers to ponder when it comes to obtaining finances to pay for their sea craft is a secured loan offered by a lender which deals specifically with loans of this type. Similar to a car loan, the lender will provide financing for the boat purchase and in turn will have a secured interest in the boat itself. Therefore, if the borrower fails to pay their monthly payments consistently the lender is able to repossess the boat as a result.

This type of loan is beneficial in that it provides the borrower with a loan which often times will have a favorable interest rate attached to it. Since the lender will have a security interest in the boat, they are able to repossess the item for lack of payment and will be more likely to offer a lower interest rate than if the loanwas unsecured. The borrower may like the fact that the interest rate is lower with this type of loan than any other variety of boat loans. However, this can also be a negative thing in the eyes of a borrower when they consider that they will always stand a chance of losing the boat should they fail to make their payments in a timely manner.

Unsecured Loan Offered by a Variety of Lenders

Another finance option for individuals interested in buying a new boat is to obtain an unsecured loan. Unsecured loans are available through a wide variety of lenders. Basically, the one who is interested in obtaining money in the way of boat loans will apply for a general loan with a lender and either be approved or denied for the loan. The loan is not specifically geared towards one purchase or another and the borrower is able to use the money not only for a boat purchase but may be able to purchase other items as well.

The benefit to obtaining this type of loan is that there is no security interest on the boat itself and the bank cannot repossess the item. However, the borrower may have to pay a higher interest rate than they would with secured boat loans. Either way, the borrower must review the terms of the boat loans to determine which loan is right for them.

Yacht lengths generally start at 3235 feet (1011 m) and go up to hundreds of feet. A mega yacht generally refers to any yacht (sail or power) above 100' or 34 m and a super yacht generally refers to any yacht over 200' or 70 m. This size is small in relation to typical cruise liners and oil tankers.

Sailing equipment is an important part of the purchase of a new or second-hand boat. It is one of those things where you can spend as much money as you wish on equipment for your new cruiser or sailing yacht, so you must give yourself a budget. Obviously, there is a set of essential equipment that all water goers must have, but then there are different sets of equipment required, dependent on whether you will be messing around locally or being more adventurous with long off-shore trips.

Your boats seaworthiness can depend on the load you put in it and where you put it. Too much weight can overload your boat and cause it to become unstable or allow small waves to come aboard. It will also reduce the amount your boat can roll before its sides dip under. Weight that is carried too high will reduce stability, making your boat more apt to roll and less inclined to return to an upright position

Yacht "No Komis" Epirb Activated - Indonesia

Thu, 6 Dec 2007 10:43:49 +0200
We just got this message from a friend's wife. Her husband's EPIRB (Yacht NO KOMIS) went off and he dropped off the nets and e-mail. The local SAR does not seem to have many assets/capabilities. We don't know Indonesia very well, anyone have any suggestions as to any other actions she should take?

This could be a series of events, none serious, but then again, who knows. Any one thing is no problem, but putting them together does make you wonder what has happened. ......"

Boat Insurance

By Alison Cole

One of the supreme delights that a person can obtain is by possessing his own boat. It takes us to the past when adventure on the high seas was a real experience and man was the complete ruler of his dominion as a commander of his ship.

At present there are few places where a common man can be master and leader of his own fate, but a boat is one of them. But possessing a boat is not without peril or cost. Boat insurance is necessary for shielding such an expensive asset.

The two chief aspects of boat insurance are legal responsibility, or security and insurance; and property loss. In some respects, they are managed the same way as automobile or home policies.

When an individual insures his boat for liability, it guards an individual against harm to another person's assets brought about by the boat. It also has provisions for lawful protection, in case one is charged for something that is protected under the boat insurance.

However, there are certain delicate differences from an automobile policy when it comes to loss and damage insurance. The characteristic coverage for loss is either 'actual cash value' (ACV), or 'agreed upon' value.

Boat insurance, which is agreed upon for worth, has a money amount printed in the policy, which is the sum, compensated for complete loss. Limited damages are restored at 'for new' prices, implying that there is no reduction imposed, apart from high wear matter like sails, and some machinery. This is the extra-costly alternative to cover a boat.

An authentic cash value policy indicates that if a boat is a complete loss, one will obtain the existing market price, not including the deductible, and suitable reduction for the age and state of the boat during loss.

Apart from size, sailboats may be distinguished by hull configuration (monohull, catamaran, trimaran), keel type (full, fin, wing, centerboard etc.), purpose (sport, racing, cruising), number and configuration of masts, and sail plan. Although sailboat terminology has varied across history, many terms now have specific meanings in the context of modern yachting.

Weekender yachts are slightly larger, sub-30-feet (9.5 m) in length. They often have twin keels or lifting keels such as in trailer sailers. This allows them to operate in shallow waters, and if needed "dry out"become beached as the tide falls. The hull shape (or twin-keel layout) allows the boat to sit upright when there is no water. Such boats are designed to undertake short journeys, rarely lasting more than 2 or 3 days (hence their name). Of course, in coastal areas long trips may be undertaken in a series of short hops.

I'm looking to purchase my first sailboat and I am in need of some guidance. I was leaning towards a steel or aluminum hull but most do not have a swim step and walk through transom. It sounds kind of odd but the is a top criteria for me. Three reasons: it is easier to land big fish, it is easiers to board from a tender, and I have a dog who loves the water and if she jumps I need to get her back aboard somehow. Do you know of any steel hulled sloop or cutter rigs that have a walk through transom and a swim step?! I am looking at the 40'-45' range.

Marine Article Of The Month

Boats

By Thomas Morva

A boat in common parlance is a watercraft, generally smaller in size to most ships. A boat consists of structures called hulls and some system of propulsion, such as paddles, oars, a setting pole, a sail, paddlewheels and so forth.

The somewhat horizontal but arched structure that spans the boats hull is known as the deck. Unlike a ship, where there are numerous decks, a boat conventionally has just has one. The cabins floor is called the sole. The base of the deck is known as the deck head. The vertical bulkheads divide the internal area. Some bulkheads are significant in the overall structure of the boat. The boats front side is known as the bow (or prow); the back of the boat is the stern. The starboard and the port are the right and the left sides of the boat, respectively.

Today, the command area of a big boat is called perhaps inappropriately the bridge. The bridge, depending upon the design, can be the wheelhouse or the cockpit.

The toilet compartments are called the heads, and a trip to relieve oneself is called the head call. During olden days, the cord used to maneuver a sailboat was made of linen; today it is made of cotton. That cord is known as the line. Though they have their own names, ''halyards'' is the name given to the cord used for raising flags or sails; sheets control the sails positioning.

The cords and the wire are collectively termed rigging. The cords and the wires that are set up before the boat sets for sail is referred to as standing rigging; the cords that are used while the boat is in motion is known as running rigging. For example, the halyard or the sheet is part if the running rigging, and the forestay is a part of the standing rigging.'

Initially, inflatable boats were developed for use in the navy for transporting torpedoes and other cargo as well as other applications. Over time, recreational applications evolved for the smaller boats including pleasure, tender and fishing. When the stability, flotation and seaworthiness of inflatable boats became more known, lifesaving and rescue agencies around the world began using them as tenders on their larger vessels. Today, rescue and military agencies around the world use inflatable boats, particularly RIBs, for many applications inshore and offshore.

Boating Article Of The Month

Boat Storage - Essential Elements To Look For

By David Faulkner

Boat storage is a necessity if you own a boat. A lot of people giddy and excited about purchasing a boat consider the factor of boat storage only when it is too late. It is a good thing that these days, you are free to choose from an array of options when it comes to selecting a boat storage arrangement that would suit your requirements.

The most accessible alternative for boat storage is definitely your own backyard, provided there is enough room to accommodate it. Your boat can be stationed here when you are not using it. It is the safest alternative as you can keep an eye on your expensive vehicle at all times.

A sturdy boat cover is, of course, essential for that added protection against extreme weather conditions, and should at the same time be constructed in a way that allows easy access to your boat.

If you've got the bucks to spare, you might invest in the construction of a boat house in your backyard that is spacious enough not only for boat storage but also for maintenance and cleaning paraphernalia. Simple maintenance jobs and repairs can also be performed here.

If, on the other hand, your backyard is not big enough to accommodate your boat, there are spaces available for rent at the marina for your boat storage requirements. Payment terms can be for one whole season or on a monthly basis. A marina situated close to a water body that you often go to is perfect and should be a major consideration before you close a boat storage deal.

There are certain elements to be considered in selecting boat storage. You should first consider your own resources before anything else. If the local government permits, you can construct your own boat storage building. Otherwise, you may consider the marina for that needed boat storage space.

This alternative, however, entails some considerations such as the manner in which your boat will be kept; easy access to your boat anytime; and the stipulated conditions in renting the place. It is also important that the boat storage facility is protected against harsh weather conditions.

Marinas are the top of the range as far as moorings are concerned. Moorings in a marina tend to provide deep water throughout the day and therefore a jetty or pontoon is provided so that you can walk to your boat without getting wet. These are known as Pontoon Moorings. They will also provide most of the facilities that you require whilst using your boat. These may include showers and toilets, chandlery, parking, cafe and even a clubhouse. The security provided by a marina will be good and in many cases will include electronic access gates and CCTV camaras.
Buy a hunter 25 sailboat at our store.

Racing yachts try to reduce the wetted surface area, which creates drag, by keeping the hull light whilst having a deep and heavy bulb keel, allowing them to support a tall mast with a great sail area. Modern designs tend to have a very wide beam and a flat bottom, to provide buoyancy preventing an excessive heel angle. Speeds of up to 35 knots can be attained in extreme conditions. Dedicated offshore racing yachts sacrifice crew comfort for speed, having basic accommodation to reduce weight. Depending on the type of race, such a yacht may have a crew of 15 or more. Very large inshore racing yachts may have a crew of 30.

Information On Boating

Our Featured Boating Writer

Should I Buy a New or Used Boat?

By Andrew McNaught

There are positives and negatives to buying both new
and used boats, much in the same way as cars. You
should look at new boats first, even though you can
find hundreds of used boats.

New boats

By purchasing a new boat, you will know everything
about the history of the boat and the motor. You
also have a warranty if something on the boat goes
wrong, which can save you money if you have a
problem. You also don't have to worry about having
to restore your boat, like you do with some used
boats, which means that you can get into the water
immediately.

In financing a new boat, you will get a much better
interest rate than you would if you chose a used
boat. You will also get a much better idea of
what kind of boat that you want for your family
when you go to a new boat showroom. Just as it
does when you buy a car, a new boat will depreciate
the most during the first season of use, so keep
that in mind.

Used boats

If you have a tight budget or are unsure about what
you are going to do with the boat, then you may want
to choose a used boat. It is a good idea to at least
look at new boats first, even if you are planning on
buying a used boat, so that you can determine what
kind of boat is best for your family.

If you want to look at the different boats that are
available, you may want to consider going to a
boat show. You can look at the boats at the show and
then narrow down your list to the type of used boat
that you prefer.

You want to make sure that you get a marine survey for
any used boat that you are considering purchasing
whether you are buying a boat online, from the
newspaper, or from a local boat dealership. It may
be expensive, but it will be worth the money spent in
the long run.

In some cases, used boats may have mechanical problems
or structural defects that are hard to detect. A
marine survey works much in the same way as a home
inspection works. The surveyor will go over every
part of the boat to see if there are any problems
with any of the operating systems or the structure
of the boat.

Depending upon the results of the survey, you can
stop the deal or use the results to get a lower price
if there are problems that need to be attended to.
Getting a marine survey is the smart decision if you
are buying a used boat. It can save you money, time,
and heartache, which will make the price of the survey
well worth it.

Summary:

There are positives and negatives to buying both new
and used boats, much in the same way as cars. You
should look at new boats first, even though you can
find hundreds of used boats.
